“Be killing sin, or it will be killing you…”
Redeeming Grace Church has been studying through John Owen’s classic work “On the Mortification of Sin in Believers.” John Owen, a seventeenth century Puritan, wrote this treatise in 1658 but his insights and directives have served the church richly ever since. Owen’s work is essentially an exposition of Romans 8:13: “If by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”
Mortification of sin is an essential aspect of the Christian’s pursuit of sanctification. As a church that desires to grow in holiness and overcome the power of sin in our lives we invested our time and effort to read through Owen’s dense and old fashion prose, archaic vocabulary, run on (and on and on) sentences, and his slowly winding structural outlines in order to mine this treasure for golden nuggets of wisdom in our fight against abiding and indwelling sin.
In order to maximize the book Eric Holter taught five sessions to provide an overview to the material and walk through the chapters highlighting and applying its contents. We commend this work to all. It can be read online in many places, purchased through Amazon (Kindle version is often made available for $0.99), or listened to in audio format.
