The church, as the beloved bride of Christ purchased by His own blood, is precious to God (Acts 20:28). Leadership in the church therefore is a solemn task, to be carried out with the greatest of care (1 Pet. 5:1-3). The Bible gives clear qualifications for the men who would oversee His church (1 Tim. 3:1-7, Titus 1:5-9) and the New Testament pattern consistently indicates that the church should lead by a plurality of elders (Titus 1:5, Acts 14:23, Acts 20:17, Phil 1:1).
